After hours of research and conducting product testing, we found the letterman bag from VarC Bags to be an excellent replacement to the traditional jacket. After speaking with students they much preferred the functionality of a bag/backpack over a traditional jacket.

Product Testing

We ordered a Letterman Bag from VarC Bags and it came within a few days. The overall construction of the bag is quite impressive. It has all of the materials you would expect in a Varsity/Letterman Jacket including wool, leather and a rib-knit lining. The front pocket is removable with a high quality velcro so a Varsity Letter can be easily sewn on the outer pocket. We ordered a bag for one of the team member’s daughter who absolutely loves it.

We also ordered a jacket from the Stewart & Strauss company and the materials and overall construction were of good quality. The attention to detail that went into the Letterman Bag was quite noticeable when compared to the Letterman Jacket. The team also liked the functionality of the Letterman Bag as it can be used all year.

History of the Letterman Jacket

Letter jackets have been around for over a century but not many people know how they came to be. The first letter jacket was actually not a jacket at all but a knit sweater that was thick and warm and worn as a uniform. The Harvard baseball team decided to sew giant H’s on the center of the sweater. This is where the term “letterman jacket” came from.

Back in that time players didn’t always get to keep their letter jerseys. If you didn’t play and sat the bench all year you had to surrender your letter jersey at the end of the season. The players that got to keep them were the ones that played a lot and that were responsible for the success of the team.

About 10 years later, the Harvard football team also followed the trend of adding letters to their jerseys. Eventually schools across the country started coming up with their own versions of the letterman jacket and a trend was born. Each team that added their letters to their jerseys would personalize them a little bit; some making the size of the letter different or giving it a different font. Sometimes they put the letter in a different place on the jersey.

Eventually the regular placement of the right side of the jersey became standard. At this point in time the varsity or letterman “jacket” was still a cardigan style sweater. As the popularity of these letter sweaters grew the athletes started wanting something heavier and more durable so the letter jacket was born.

All of the letter jackets were very similar in design; leather sleeves, wool body and the letter on the side. It was a status symbol of excellence in sports at each school. Those who had a leather jacket were known to be exceptional athletes in their respective sports.

Why the Varsity Bag is a Modern Alternative (More Functional)

After decades of the letter jacket being front and center with athletes in high school and college there is a new trend that has come about: the Letterman Bag. This stylish bag is made from premium materials and provides the athlete with the same honor that the letter jacket does.
Nowadays students have their own style of dressing which makes the Letterman bag a great alternative for these modern times where they may not want to wear something. In a time where students are carrying tons of stuff from class to class, even in high school, the Letterman bag provides function in addition to style and status.

The Letterman Bag is perfect for carrying laptops, books, and other personal belongings and can be customized to match your school’s colors. The letter that is displayed on the jacket is now proudly displayed on the bag that can be used all year long. This modern alternative to the letter jacket honors the tradition that was started 150 years ago in a unique and practical way.

Varsity Jacket vs. Varsity Bag

There are many reasons that the Letterman Bag could be a better choice for many high school or college students. Although both the letter jacket and the Letterman Bag provide the same pride and status symbol for athletes, the usefulness and functionality of the Letterman Bag raises it above the jacket in many ways. Below we have listed some of the great reasons the Letterman Bag may meet your needs better than the letter jacket.

Why You Should Purchase a Varsity Letterman Bag

  • Can be used all year long rather than just in cool or cold weather.
  • Can be customized for each individual school’s colors
  • Lots of room to carry laptops, books, tablets, cell phones, and other belongings.
  • Made of premium materials that are durable and long lasting
  • Easy to clean
  • Gives the athlete a bag that is completely unique to them

There are some students that may still want the old, traditional letter jacket and there are plenty of great selections for those who do. The Letterman Bag offers a new way to proudly display your athletic success while offering a functional and practical means of carrying the school supplies you need for your studies so you can excel academically the way you have succeeded in athletics.
